AQUOS Sharp LCD TV - Less Heat, Less Power

LCD or liquid crystal display, are commonplace today. Every day items like notebooks, your digital watch, cell phones, microwaves and many more electronic gadgets use LCD technology. There are many advantages of using LCD over other displays. TV's have become so slim-line today due to LCD compared to the old tube style TV's, they use less energy and give off a lot less heat too.

The old tube televisions used 3 electron guns to generate an image. These worked by a moving image being flashed back and forth on the back of the screen to generate the image. AQUOS Sharp LCD TVs create the image you see when you switch on the television in a totally contrasting approach.

Like computer screen and even digital photo frames, if you get in close to a flat screen television you will see that the image is composed of millions of minute squares, known as pixels. Each pixel is basically a square of blue, green or red light that is flicked on and off at inconceivable speeds which makes a moving picture in color. The tiny pixels are flicked on and off by rotating polarized light generated by liquid crystals. It helps to understand how light travels in order to realize how AQUOS Sharp LCD TV screens actually work.

Using 2 sets of polarized sunglasses, you are able to execute a simple experiment. Place one pair in front of the other, you'll be able to see right through both pairs, no problem. But if you slowly rotate just one of the pairs, you will notice the light getting gradually darker. When the two pairs are at 90 degrees to each other, you won't be able to see through them at all.

Using the sunglasses trick, AQUOS Sharp LCD televisions are able to switch the colored lights of pixels off and on at high speed. At the back of the screen, there's a large bright light that shines out toward the viewer. Millions of pixels made up of sub pixels are in front of this bright light in colors of red, blue and green. Positioned in front and behind each pixel is a polarizing glass filter positioned at a ninety degree angle to each other.

That means the pixel normally looks dark. A minuscule liquid crystal is placed between the polarizing filters which is controlled electronically to flick it on and off. When it's switched on, it rotates the light passing through it through 90 degrees, effectively allowing light to flow through the two polarizing filters and making the pixel look bright. The pixels are regulated by separate transistors that flick on and off at incredibly high speeds, many times every second.

This light source that creates the image we see generates considerably less heat and as there are no phosphors they also use a lot less power than Plasma TVs and older tube TVs. Also, because of the nature of AQUOS Sharp LCD technology, there is no radiation emitted from the screen itself.

When first produced, LCD televisions tended to be more expensive than a plasma model. As with most new technologies today, the advances are quicker and this has helped to bring the price down to the same level, it's also well worth noting that AQUOS Sharp LCD have a longer life than Plasma TVs as well as using less power to operate.
