When summer rolls around and it is time to relax in your yard or garden, you want to have a beautiful, healthy lawn to enjoy. Whether you are playing outside with the kids or gathering friends for a summer BBQ, a healthy green lawn is important. Not only will you enjoy your lawn more if it is healthy and well kept, but it adds value to your property. There are a number of reasons to take care of your lawn and all you need are a few tips to keep your lawn properly maintained.

Sometimes, it is tempting to cut the grass very short. After all, this means you will not have to cut it as often. However, cutting your grass to short can be harmful to your lawn. It is best to cut the grass to around 6-8 cm. Cutting the grass lower prevents the soil from absorbing moisture as well, which in turn truncates the growth of the grass's roots. For deep, healthy roots don't cut the grass to short. You should also avoid cutting it when the grass is wet. Cutting wet grass can lead to close crop cutting and cause your lawnmower blades to become dull and rusty.

Your lawnmower blades are the most important part of your lawnmower when it comes to healthy care and maintenance of your lawn. Blunt, dull blades damage grass blades, which hinders the growth of the grass. It is important to check the lawnmower blades periodically. In order to enhance the growth of your lawn, leave mowed grass clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings provide essential nitrogen that will help your grass grow strong and green.

It is also important that you understand the appropriate way to water the grass. If you do not have a professionally installed sprinkler system, you must pay close attention to the amount and even distribution of water. Water until your lawn has been covered with about 2.5 cm of water. This is easy to measure placing a rain gauge or other small container on the lawn while watering. Once you reach 2.5 cm you no longer need to water.

A well watered and mowed lawn is a healthy and nice looking lawn. In addition to measuring the amount of water on your lawn, it is best to water your lawn in the early hours of the morning. This prevents your efforts at watering from being evaporated by the sun. Early morning watering also promotes healthy grass growth.
