As parents decorate a nursery for their new baby, they may not realize that there are any safety hazards when it comes to baby bedding. Infant bedding comes in so many cute styles and colors it is easy to get caught up in the fun, but some of those same items are dangerous; use these tips to provide a comfy and safe place for your new baby.
Fitted Sheets and receiving blankets that are light in weight are the main things you need when picking baby bedding. You can choose a set that comes with a cute comforter, but chances are you won't even need it until your child is around 2. Never cover an infant (0-12 months) with a heavy blanket because not only will your child overheat during slumber but it is also a suffocation hazard.
By dressing your infant in seasonally appropriate clothing, you can avoid the use of heavy blankets or your infant becoming uncomfortable while sleeping.
Throw away any crib bumpers that come with your baby bedding, because those bumpers are unsafe and can raise the risk of SIDS. Beware of crib bumpers that can help the child get out of their crib once they are old enough to climb. Bumpers aren't sufficient, though they look good with baby girl or boy bedding sets.
Take stuffed animals and pillows out of the crib - no matter how adorable -before your baby sleeps in it, because they present a suffocation risk. It is alright for a child to have toys in the crib as long as they are not falling asleep.
Crib bedding does so much to give a nursery its atmosphere, but you need to keep in mind that those fluffy comforters and pillows are actually not safe for your baby, and should be used only for looks, not for sleeping. Keep infant bedding to a minimum, and if you're not sure about something, ask your pediatrician for advice.
When your son or daughter graduates to a toddler bed, you have more options in decoration since you can now use comforters and pillows (though your child may be the one who chooses the decor!)
