Sharp Aquos LCD Television - Sharp & In Focus

LCD or liquid crystal display, are commonplace today. Every day items like notebooks, your digital watch, cell phones, microwaves and many more electronic gadgets use LCD technology. There are many advantages of using LCD over other displays. With Sharp Aquos LCD technology, televisions have become slimmer and much lighter, drawing less power and emitting less heat than the traditional CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs.

You may know that a traditional CRT TV uses three electron guns to produce its picture. They are the equivalent to three very fast, accurate paintbrushes that flash back and forth, painting a moving image on the back of your screen that you see when sitting in front of it. In contrast, LCD Television screens work in a completely different way.

If you sit up close to a flat screen Sharp Aquos LCD TV, you'll notice that the picture is made from millions of tiny blocks called pixels or picture elements, the same for computers and digital photo frames. Each pixel is basically a square of blue, green or red light that is flicked on and off at inconceivable speeds which makes a moving picture in color. The tiny pixels are flicked on and off by rotating polarized light generated by liquid crystals. It helps to understand how light travels in order to realize how Sharp Aquos LCD TV screens actually work.

Using 2 sets of polarized sunglasses, you are able to execute a simple experiment. By placing 1 pair over the other you'll notice it's still possible to view quite clearly through both pairs. By rotating just 1 pair, you'll see that the light will begin to get darker. When the two pairs are at 90 degrees to each other, you won't be able to see through them at all.

A Sharp Aquos LCD TV screen uses the sunglasses trick to switch its colored pixels on or off. At the back of the screen, there's a large bright light that shines out toward the viewer. In front of this, there are the millions of pixels, each one made up of smaller areas called sub-pixels that are colored red, blue, or green. Behind every pixel is a polarized glass filter at at a 90 degree angle in front of each pixel is a further polarizing filter.

The pixels therefore look dark. A liquid crystal is positioned between the filters and this is switched on and off electronically. When it's on, the light that passes through it is rotated through 90 degrees therefore the light is passing through the filters and making the pixel bright. Each pixel is controlled by a separate transistor that can switch it on or off many times each second.

So, unlike traditional and Plasma televisions, there are no phosphors that light up, less power is needed for operation and the light source in a Sharp Aquos LCD television generates less heat than a Plasma or traditional television. Another big plus is that LCD technology emits no radiation from the TV screen.

When LCD TVs first hit our stores, they were a more expensive option compared to Plasma TVs. However, with technology advances being so quick nowadays, the prices are now more on a par and with a generally longer life and less power usage, they are well worth looking at.
