Sharp Aquos TV's - Polarizing Thoughts

LCD or liquid crystal display, are commonplace today. Every day items like notebooks, your digital watch, cell phones, microwaves and many more electronic gadgets use LCD technology. There are many advantages of using LCD over other displays. In a Sharp Aquos TV, they are thinner and lighter and draw much less powers than the older style cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions and produce far less heat.

The old tube televisions used 3 electron guns to generate an image. Like 3 incredibly quick paintbrushes, the guns worked by rapidly flashing a moving back and forth behind the screen to create the image you saw. The pixels are in front of this, each pixel being made up of red, green and blue sub-pixels. Behind every pixel is a polarized glass filter at at a 90 degree angle in front of each pixel is a further polarizing filter.

That means the pixel normally looks dark. In between the two polarizing filters there's a microscopic liquid crystal that can be switched on or off electronically. As the liquid crystal is turned on, the light flows through it at a rotation of ninety degrees which passes through the polarizing filters and the pixel shows as bright. The transistors that control the pixels switch on and off very quickly, many times a second in fact.

This light source that creates the image we see generates considerably less heat and as there are no phosphors they also use a lot less power than Plasma TVs and older tube TVs. Another big plus is that LCD technology emits no radiation from the Sharp Aquos TV screen.

When LCD TVs first hit our stores, they were a more expensive option compared to Plasma TVs. As with most new technologies today, the advances are quicker and this has helped to bring the price down to the same level, it's also well worth noting that LCD have a longer life than Plasma TVs as well as using less power to operate.
